Install Apps from PPAs without Using the Terminal
Here's a really nice Lucid feature. In this video you can see that users can now add software from your PPA without using the CLI. They just need to get you deb line, and using the software center, they are good to go.
just curious, how are you doing the screencasts? Are you using Camtasia in Windows and Virtual box to display Ubuntu or is there some really good native app for screencasting in Linux that I am unaware of?
I like this its good that you can do this from the software center as its more user friendly then synaptic. I think however that you can add the ppa:j-launchpad-ruthgard-org/ppa line instead of the deb line, its esier to find in launchpad.
I believe you can use the PPA: line instead of deb - no ?
And what happens to the OpenPGP keys for your archive ? Did you add them previously ? Adding only the deb line would normally pop up a warning that you're installing unsigned software. I don't see that in the video.
Using the PPA: line through Software Sources has been available for a couple of releases now, and automatically adds the GPG keys.
Canonical needs to whitelist Launchpad PPAs and turn on repository support in the apt: link. It's already there -- it's just considered a security problem and so it's disabled.
The next step is go to one-click from browser to addition repository addition and password authenication; it could benefit from an itunes://-like protocol handler to open up the Software Centre and do the right thing.
You do know you can do this through Synaptic since 10 years or so ?
ReplyDeleteNot impressed. Synaptic did this for .. like forever.
ReplyDeleteJust a link that users can click is a good solution (with proper warning bla bla)
Copying text seems silly. That isn't something MS or Apple would ever call a good solution.

ReplyDeleteYes, but the Ubuntu one has a far better graphical interface..
ReplyDeleteRe screencasts: There's a stop icon in the Notification Area so that suggests its gtr-recordmydesktop or istanbul.
ReplyDeleteVery nice. I'm sure this is only the beginning. It's getting there, I just wish they would hurry up. :)
ReplyDeleteNice, clear and concise video.

*That* would be easy. This? Not.
It's been easier to do than you show in the video since Karmic:

The only thing different in Lucid is that Software Sources can be opened from both Software Center and System->Administration
