I guess today is "Cyber Monday" or something like that? I'm looking for a reasonably priced laptop for my 13 year old daughter and saw that I had an email from Dell with some offers in it. After a little clicking around to compare different laptops, I ended up on
a comparison page for the Vostro line. Naturally, I was drawn to the $299 priced laptop, when I noticed that there are 2 computers that differ only in the OS pre-installed, AND $70! This is the first time I've just naturally stumbled upon such a blatant exposure of the Windows tax.
In Poland, the difference between a laptop with Windows 7 and the same laptop with no OS installed (not many are available w/o Windows, though) can be up to 350-400zł, which is about 110-130$. That would be more than 1/3 of the price of that Vostro laptop you've found.

Also I don't get why they won't use Ubuntu logo instead of that custom icon.
Do you know what version of U. is pre-installed? The purchasing/customization text doesn't say.
ReplyDeleteIt really does not matter what version as upgrades are semi-automatic and free. Semi-automatic, because you have the right to refuse a software upgrade. So, if for example you pay a lot for data transfer, you may want to do your upgrades, not when they are available, but when the end of the week or end of the month arrives. It is your freedom of choice

Do you think that that the hardware certification effort is generally unimportant for the effort to ensure consumers can trust that specific releases of Ubuntu will run on the hardware?
I think the certification effort is a very important part of the OEM strategy. And I think perhaps someone responsible for the OEM strategy needs to figure out why this piece of hardware for sale in Dec 2012, hasn't been officially certified for at least 12.04 release to provide some consumer confidence in the upgrade.
Not having this hardware certified for the 12.04 upgrade just looks...bad..and undermines a lot of what I think the cert program is meant to achieve.

What about the delivery date difference. Around a week for Ubuntu but next day for the windows version.

DeleteThe Canonical employee did not say whether the Dell Vostro with Linux is "easily" found on any Dell Website, since it makes no difference in sales volume if the Ubuntu based Dells are almost impossible to find or even know about.
